It feels like winter is here in Melbourne this week. We were dreaming of warmer days today and made these Lei’s to cheer us up. We used string, pretty paper cut using a flower punch, and left over party straws cut into small pieces. A very easy craft activity for 3-8 year old children. We also discovered today that in Hawaii one of the most popular occasions at which Lei’s will be given is to celebrate Birthdays. We think we have found the perfect craft activity for our next Under the Sea party.

It doesn’t take much to be transported back to the delight of my childhood.
Since becoming a Mother I have developed a curiosity about the images and photographs of my early days and the stories behind the smiling eyes in the family Snaps.
I wonder sometimes about the idea of memory and whether all that we remember is based on fact or embellishment by stories re-told or photographs carefully placed in the family albums.
Celebrating Mothers day today I have been wondering about the story behind this picture of my Mum with my sisters and I circa 1974-see top image…(the baby-that’s me)
I wonder was she tired, had she been up baking until after midnight, did she have an unsettled baby who never got enough sleep, had her day started at 5.30 am with an early riser?
I wonder was there breakfast cereal all over the floor in her kitchen, did she have a weeks worth of washing piled up in the laundry?
And mostly I wonder was she happy that day…
While I dont know the answers to these questions in relation to my mothers photograph with her three babies…
I know the answer is a resounding YES to all of the above in my photograph with my three babies.
Happy Mothers Day!

Inspired by some painted plant pots at http://yespleaseblog.blogspot.com.au/2010/05/around-world-with-bash-please-coffee.html,

Mia and I created these “Tin can” plant pots at home today.
We nailed holes in the bottom of our ‘up-cycled’ tin cans and covered them with paper using PVA glue.
Add some ribbon a couple of purple pansies and we think these will be perfect for the Nanna’s on Mothers day this Sunday.
They were ridiculously inexpensive with the pansies costing us $2 each at our local nursery.

We think these would make a gorgeous “party favor” for a little party…they would look lovely sitting upon the party table and could be sent home with little party guests when it is time to go x

I Love the uncomplicated nature of a pin the tail game. Simple concept involving a blindfold, a donkey and a tail…When planning for Ned’s first birthday celebration at our local reserve last year I thought this would be a fun game to play. However I wanted more out of this game than the usual simple party entertainment. I wanted a beautiful image that made us think of spring (Ned’s Season), I wanted the game to look so lovely after it had been played that we would want to hang it on his wall, I wanted to be able to look at the game in the months that followed and remember together with Miss 7 and Mr 4 the fun that we had celebrating our baby Ned’s first birthday. A lot to ask for in one game…
Enter Anna my neighbor, collaborator, and friend who listened to my brief and created this beautiful game (the aim of which is to pin the bird in its nest). Find Anna and this lovely game at http://sweetpolka.blogspot.com.au/
We have Ned’s Pin the bird game framed on the wall in his bedroom and it is beautiful x

This glitter number party cake topper was so easy to make. You simply need 1 paper mache number (we buy ours at Lincraft or Spotlight in Melbourne), 1 miniature icy pole stick, PVA glue and Paint and glitter in the color of your choice. Just attach your miniature icy pole stick using glue (this serves as a handle)…then once dry you can apply paint and glue (we mix them together to save on time), then add glitter-apply to all sides. Voila x

I LOVE the seasonal rhythm birthday parties bring to our family. Miss 7 knows that when the leaves on the trees start to turn that its time to start planning for her April Birthday Party, while Mr 4 starts planning his Summer Soiree from the day after Christmas. Likewise Miss 7 and Mr 4 know their Birth Day stories so well now it makes me smile to hear them retelling them to each other…and anyone else who will listen. Miss 7 knows that on the day of her arrival the leaves on our ‘plane tree lined street’ had already fallen and covered the path I walked with heavy feet to our car making a swish, swish sound as I went. She knows that it was a beautiful Autumn morning with a chill to the air and a sunny sky above. She also knows that the night before her birth I sat in her room for most of the night by the light of her pretty green fairy lights wondering about the little-person within. Miss 7 loves to recount the fact that on her first day in the world she squeezed her eyes shut ALL DAY and most of the night…opening them cautiously when there was no-one in the room except her and Mummy.

And so…when we shared our news with Miss 7 and Mr 4 in Autumn last year of our baby number 3 due to arrive in September , there was much discussion about what ‘Season’ this baby would be ? It was decided that we should put flowers into the garden to welcome our baby in spring…and so in April we lovingly placed Freesia bulbs deep into the ground around our home. During the weeks that led to Baby’s arrival we noticed with much excitement one by one the freesias start to appear randomly in our garden beds. Each Beautiful Freesia seemed to take us another step closer to our baby’s arrival and we all welcomed the distraction while we waited…

Our Baby Boy arrived on a beautiful spring day in September last year, and as I walked to the car on the way to hospital I could smell freesias in the air, and see the cheerful dots of color throughout our garden beds. Of course Miss 7 and Mr 4 greeted us in hospital after baby’s arrival bearing a beautiful bunch of hand-picked Freesias which sat in a vase beside our bed for our stay…

I did not remove the bulbs from the garden after they had flowered as ‘they’ say you are supposed to do….and to our surprise one by one our Freesias have flowered again this spring…just in time for our Baby Boys first birthday.

I am Belinda…and this is my Blog.
